HOUSTON, TX - Have you ever been somewhere and wondered what song the dj was playing. Standing there probably engulfed in conversation just to be distracted by the sound of something familiar but unfamiliar. Just as you think that feeling and time has passed... in comes another voice and bevy of musicians playing the drums, guitar and other instruments that move your body from your previous stance into an impromptu dance. It happens over and over again. This is what its like to hear the sounds off the vinyl that Erika Payan Zanetti aka DJ EPZ plays when she spins a set.
EPZ has a vast collection of music that she has herself collected from all around the worlds. When others visit gift shops and malls when traveling, Erika visits the local record store. She finds the rhythm of the people and brings a piece of that back with her.
She regales us with those tunes every Thursday to those who would listen on Rice University's radio station KTRU.org. She calls it the "World Music Show". Appropriately named. The vinyl records she plays have all taken a journey to get to the stylus and ultimately our ears.
Her selection and taste is impeccable. Mostly afrobeat and Latin rhythms accentuated by the beat of a drum that takes all humans back to those primitive times where the beat of a drum meant something.
This is a reflection of the time spent with someone that is giving back to us musically. This is DJ EPZ and the World Music Show.
