Saying this was a "special night" would be an understatement. J Dilla's number one influence was, Pete Rock, as told to attendees by Dilla's Mom, Ma Dukes. The evening seemed to build up perfectly to Pete's DJ set with a set by 45-allstars, Fistful of Soul, who absolutely killed it by pulling out all stops and throwing a few rarities in the mix with some super-classics. Let's not forget Jay Maze and The Marauderz, who completely decimated the stage with their live, well-rehearsed, in-the-pocket, boom-bap meets funk style hip-hop which has been well put together in terms of the dynamics and overall sound. Certainly a new flavor of hip-hop for Houston.
The energy of the night hit its climax when the Godfather of Hip-Hop, Pete Rock, took to the stage. The crowd went wild as Pete filmed the screaming mass of Houston fans (from his phone) who had been eagerly awaiting his presence the entire evening. Pete started things off right and had the crowd jumping early. He masterfully mixed, cut, and scratched his way through a stellar, unforgettable showcasing, reminding people what a true disc jockey does. Pete ended the night dropping classics such as "Reminisce Over You" and even mixed in a few new unreleased tracks that he'd produced. The DJ, emcee and producer, showed the entire crowd at The Continental Club, through virtue of display why he is, as they say, The Godfather of Hip-Hop. Long live Pete Rock and J Dilla, two legends who will never die!
Special thanks to THEGR8THINKAS, HouLaGo, Risky Cereal, 3rd Eye Promo for making this event happen. Oh and a slight thing of note, this amazing show took place on the Urban Circus 4th Anniversary! So happy birthday to us - four years strong as an art collective and a solid year and a half online as an underground media source for Houston and beyond!
